Collision invites you to create and plant your flag for Greater Manchester
About the work
“Planting a flag” is a centuries-old practice used to claim ownership of places. They also act as markers of human endeavour, with the act of planting a flag being just as symbolically important as the colours and symbols borne by them.
We invite you, the people of Greater Manchester, to design and plant your own flags in places that have personal significance to you. We’ve created a virtual twin of the region in Roblox reserved exclusively for the flags created by its inhabitants.
Instructions
1) Visit Collision.
2) Click through the screens to discover the flag creator. Then design your flag! (Mobile devices work best if you want to take your flag out into the world!)
3) When you’re happy with your design, hit the flag icon in the top-right. The site will try to get your device’s location to plant your flag where you are. (You’ll need to give us permission for this, but don’t worry! We only use your location to plant your flag in the world, we won’t be tracking your location at any other time.)
4) Plant your flag where you want to!
5) Follow the link from the creator to the flag space, where you can access the digital twin of Greater Manchester. The best and most social experience can be had by entering the flag space in Roblox. There is also a digital drone in the space relaying a live stream to YouTube.
